The Glow of Ms. Etna

Sometimes I'm amazed at some of the stories of my Sicilian family ancestry, how they came to America in the early part of the 20th century, the traditions they still carry on, and the pride of their heritage. The DNA test I took claimed I have 24% Italian in my genes. Whether that's accurate or not, I'm definitely of a Sicilian bloodline, and I think it's pretty cool 😊

What I love about Sicily is the blend of being a desert yet so fertile with citrus fruits, grapes and plumerias. Visiting Hawaii a few years ago, the scent of plumerias were everywhere and it is one of my favorite floral scents. I'm surprised plumerias grow in Sicily because I think of that flower growing in a more lush tropical environment. Blood oranges are also a thing in Sicily, and those are delicious. Sicilians grow the best tasting lemons too. And of course wine is another gift from this volcanic island.

This abundance is due to the rich fertile soil from the volcanos nearby, particularly the active Mt. Etna. In this painting, I refer to her as Ms. Etna, and the glowing flow of her lava and plumes of ash contribute to this soil. I also imagine standing at a market in Catania, indulging in the beautiful colors of this magical place.

Painted on 10x12 canvas board in gouache, fluorescent acrylic and other mixed media.

Italy in watercolor

Using cut pieces of Arches cold pressed watercolor paper, here are a couple of 'slices' of Italy in vibrant watercolor. The vertical piece is copied from a photo of Sardenia. Sardenia is an Italian island well known for cheese and pristine beaches. The horizontal piece is the Ponte Vechio in Florence, and was a commission for a friend. She visited Florence a couple of years ago, and fell in love with the scenery (and who wouldn't?). These paintings are 10 inches wide by 2 inches tall, and are perfect for bookmarks.

Tuscan Sunset Ride in gouache

Tuscany Italy is a dream to visit. The wine, the sunflowers, the colors, and romance are all very tantalizing to my soul. I've tried to capture that feeling in this painting. Usually the cyrpress tree is more predominant in images of this region, but I felt the willow tree-a symbol of balance and harmony-was a more fitting icon. Riding a bike through these hills would feel refreshing and peaceful, but I didn't include the wine on this bike ride. After a glass or two, I don't think I could pedal back home. This picture of paradise was painted in gouache on canvas board.

Traveling vicariously by Art Journal #2

Since coming back from vacation in March in Iceland, I think I am ready for someplace with warmer temperatures. Don't get me wrong, Iceland is GORGEOUS, and like no other place on this earth I am convinced. But sideways rain, and having to wear snowboots on spring break wasn't as comfortable as the places I would be listed below.

Despite the giant pythons and alligator-eating-children in Florida, I would love to see Key West. Something about all of those pastel buildings and islands that scream tropical vacation, without leaving the states!

What's even better than Florida? Tuscany Italy! While it may not have warm sandy beaches and cold fruity alcholic beverages, the vineyards and rolling hills seem romantic and dreamy just as well. This is my husband's dream vacation, and I really hope to get there with him for that honeymoon we never were able to take.

Fairy Forest

Lately I have been reading more fantasy novels and find my imagination inspired by the other worldly scenes described in these books. I fin...
